My favorite firestarter involves dryer lint and old candle wax. Just pack the lint into the cups of an egg carton, pour on hot wax and let cool. Then cut up the egg carton and store. [2c]

There is a bunch of good tips on making fire-starters here before an outing/needed.

One thing to learn to do well is start a fire with no pre-made fire-starters. Learn the best materials in your area. Think far enough ahead to pull some material and dry it before you need it.

After you can do it really well without a starter, never leave home without fatwood ;)

    wax and sawdust
pour melted wax into cupcake papers prefilled with the sawdust
when hard you can carry them anywhere
break into chunks for startin fires or use them whole
you can cook over them in a small can or use them as a candle
