You can actually float a needle on the surface of water without the leaf. Rub vigorously on a magnet (one end of the needle on one end of the magnet) and float on quiet water in a glass or aluminum pot inside the tent. Surface tension will hold it up long enough to get a north south line. If you know which end of the magnet was north, the rest is easy.
Or, add magnet to a needle or nail at the mid point and float it on a piece of bark. And it will float until you are done with it.
