@Legion489 I have started reading Farmers Almanac online. It is filled with great info and articles. It doesn't have the politician spin that Mother Earth News does. Check it out- Old Farmer's Almanac: weather forecasts gardening moon calendar recipes
And may I add that this site is developing quite the library of it's own.. Check out the resource section and add to it..
Graywolf, We went thru Hurricane Rita and Hurricane Ike and we were like you, we had plenty. We have been preppers for sometime at that point. When I was growing up we had a lot o tornados in NE OK. My MOM kept the larder full and never had to skip a meal. We would get the candles out and tell stories. My parents made it an adventure.
Just a thought to peppers... Don't just accumulate for SHTF. Not saying not to. But to also accumulate for living well.
My parents came through the depression ,Dad became the accumulator of skills in the shop and stuff and mom accumulator of knowledge and house hold skills particularly those of the past. When we moved from the city where i was born ,to the mountains, black outs were common both summer and winter so going with out power was no big deal . We had an oil heater and fire place and cooked with propane more often then not. Lot to be said for little old cabins. We had a hand dug well and out houses , so when the pipes froze it was no big deal . I remember the cold war and the fear of Russians bombing us , and all through the years there has always been some threat that reaffirmed our determination to survive , it was an old well developed live style Much of my generation had their head in the sand or some where else, so there has always been the need for government to step in for them , but we preferred to hold our own . When the earth quake hit in 92 ,first priority was family, and then look after the neighbors, then the community . Currently with new threats more internal and external ,being able to stand on one's own has become far more important in having extended food and water and material for repairs and altering the house for defenses,, having many more aggressive destructive people in this country. In dad's day ,during the depression ,if you saw some one off to the side of the road you kept distance and kept going , either it was a trap, or an issue your not prepared to handle( sickness or dying ) A great deal of ignorance and fear ruled the day. Today we recognize the importance of reporting to the EMS and send them help. but right now those services are readily available. Post SHTF they won't be, nor likely be cell phones either. By the way , should there be a pandemic , there will also be a severe drop in emergency service personal ,bank on it. As for my own accumulation , beyond years worth of food and water and other living supplies, I accumulate materials for doing work for barter . you might accumulate gold , I value welding rod and other relevant metals for making a repairing things .as well as machine tools and equipment and skills for casting and forging for replacing worn out or missing parts. Farming will always remain the most important aspect of survival ,and the fewer people you have to do the work the more machinery it takes to make it happen. During the dark ages when villages were taken in battle ,one group of people always survived that battle , the village black smith.
