    Here are the three biggies.

Ol' Remus's Most Excellent Rules For Survival, with a condensed description of each. Here are the three biggies.

Rule 1 - Stay away from crowds.
Crowds are the simplest form of conspiracy.
They may not have bad intentions, but no crowd has good intentions.
For instance, crowds will 'redistribute' your supplies and call their intentions good. Joining a crowd limits your options,
    its motives are volatile,
they're targets for even larger crowds,
and what happens to the crowd happens to you.

    Rule 2 - Food first.
Adequate shelter and a campfire can be improvised and improvements made later. Food can't be improvised,
    and if imprudently deferred,
physical and mental debilitation will follow.
Hunger is not merely increased appetite,
    there's no "toughing it out",
it's an exit ramp from life.
All planning must first answer the problem of food.

Rule 3 - Good enough and plenty of it.
    Examples.
Durable clothing appropriate to the climate with duplicates in depth.
A manageable battery of effective and reliable firearms with a copious supply of ammo and deep reserves.
Simple hand tools, basic materials, spare parts and small items in quantity.
Double or triple backups for otherwise irreplaceable gear.
Avoid anything with batteries or keypads if an alternative is available.

There won't be a conflict between Rule 1 and another rule because Rule 1 is inviolable.

There are more rules. They're more fun to talk about.

Notice I don't mention water. Here in the eastern hills there's a run in every wrinkle and a river in every valley. There are creeks, ponds, weeps and springs in the hills themselves. It rains regularly. Water is more often a nuisance than a problem.

The need for purification remains, however.

Here in California water is a problem not having a good natural supply .
One cannot defend their stuff with out getting some sleep once in a while , and who tends to the wounds you can't reach ?
It takes others whom you trust, to survive, not even the mountain men did it all on their own.
Another aspect is reliable communications ,not just communications, but with people that actually have your 6 and you have theirs .
The world is a wash of con jobs now ,just think of what life might be like with people going to greater effort to deceive .
Probably the most difficult issue is dealing with beggars ,children in particular going house to house looking for donations for their families or just them selves . Some will be scoping the situations for raiders as well . Bet on it.
Take lessons from Venezuela seriously .

No doubt about that :) The last place I would set up shop though is any place that does not have multiple natural sources of water and preferably a shallow aquifer area or a spring where purification is not required. Rivers and Lakes on the hand are a good source of fish, game and plants to eat. Something to be said for a roasting muskrat and a pan of cattail roots seasoned with wild garlic and as a bonus you have 1 muskrat pelt toward some comfy moccasin liners or any number of other useful things once tanned and softened.

Nothing wrong with a small group that you know well for mutual benefit. Making those friends Post Event not wise. Never place yourself in a position where you depend on anyone else and never trust anyone because in the right set of circumstances anyone will sell you out for their own gain. Then you are all shocked and like wow I never saw that coming.

One good long gun and a dependable side arm with the basic spare parts. The less complex the weapon the better IE a breech load double barrel shotgun with basically 3 moving parts much better for the long haul than a complex auto or semi auto. Day to day use bows, sling shots, David Slings, Spears, snares and dead falls should be the tools of the hunting trade. Just takes a bit of practice to become deadly with them and to craft them.

#1 Very good advise... From Men in Black, "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it!"
#2 Having a constant reliable source of food is paramount. As hunger increases and starvation sets in, mental acuity diminishes and poor decisions follow.
#3 Speaks to preparing for unknown eventualities. Backups for everything that is required for your survival. One is None, and so forth.

Rule 1 should be in full effect now. Every mass killing world wide has happened in crowds or crowded events.
