Not at the moment thanks, but I just installed adobe flash and we'll see how that works out. I think maybe part of the problem is that although linux has it's own way of doing things... LOL, I keep looking for complication where there is simplicity.[booze]

Thanks for the help though guys... I'll learn as I do a few things I'm sure, and probably have more questions.

I've noticed little if any performance benefit when running Ubuntu vs. Vista on my laptop. I dunno if that has something to do with having setit up as a dual boot machine via the Wubi installer vs. eliminating Vista and running Ubuntu only. But performance benefits or lack thereof aside I still like Ubuntu.

Just a little info- Open Office can be run in Windows too. Our whole family has used it for years on Windows based computers.

You're welcome, glad to be of help.

Actually I'm still learning myself. Just figured out how to get an external webcam to work, special program in the repository called, "cheese" of all things. Lets you even take movies just like the internal one do in windows. Don't know why anyone would want to take movies of themselves working on a computer. [booze] But for things like Skype, it would be nice to have. Oh well, I'm off to other places now, see ya around.

Good tip Ghost, I've used OO now for about 4 years. My wife's mac runs the mac version called neooffice. The hospital we used to go to before we moved ran OO as well. Too bad they don't have an Outlook replacement yet. I used Evolution fairly successfully under Mint for quite a few years.

I use Thunderbird on both my Linux and windows computers. got my wife into using it as well, but she still uses MS Office on her vista computer. Still working on getting her to use OO. I use OO on my own computers.

I havn't figured out the repository yet... probably terminology... need to read a bit.

My next challenge is that I can't figure out how to load java. Tried a couple of different things but no go. I like to keep netdania open for the somewhat realtime charts.

Upload/download/management is foreign to me yet. Any suggestions on the java?

If I recall correctly when I installed Java (use it for the streaming police scanner) I did it through the Software Center and installed the Sun Java plug in or/equivalent. The search function works like no MS products search function could ever dream of working.

From the menu system - administrator go to "Synaptic Package Manager" that is your link to the repositories, (actual locations where Linux software is stored), when you click on it you will have to type in your password, then go to the search button and click it, (I don't use the quick search). Anyway, then a little popup will come up, type your search word in that and a list will come up in the top right window. scroll through that until you find what you are looking for. Actually, I just did the search for java on mine and had to scroll down until I found it. It is called java-common and should already be installed as several of the programs like Open Office and I think Firefox use it, there are some addons for it. When you click on the little box and have made all the choices you want, go up on the left to the icon for "Apply" if all goes as planned, your programs will download and install... As for netdenia, I've no experience with that so I'm at a loss to help there, I just believe java-common should already be installed.

Well, wife just got up [own2] so I must go for now. Once you figure that software thing out, you will find no end to programs, to check out as it's all about [freedom] freedom.

Where is the software "center" located? Don't see something exactly named that Redneck. Thanks.

Used this method and it all looks like it installed but the web page doesn't seem to recognize it. I'll poke around a bit. The lead to the repository is helpful.

Thanks. Can't seem to find that on mine, but according to what you supplied I did exactly as the synaptic manager calls for...

Not sure why the web page wont recognize it.

I tried doing a Google to that netdenia web page, and it loaded for me including the chart. If you are using Firefox, check to see if the plugin is loaded. Go to tools click on add-ons then look in plugins, java should be there. Failing all that, sometimes if you reboot, things start working as they should. funny thing about Linux, mostly you don't have to reboot for anything, but then again when adding new stuff you do and then it works.[beat]

By the way, the software center may not be called that in Mint, not sure about Ubuntu. OTT, there are about three different ways to do those software downloads. I just like synaptic best, but I will also use the "Software Manager" at times.

Yes, I remember that thread from time past. However, I know i can't switch hers to Linux because of her work. Some of the things she needs for her job won't work on a Linux computer. We have tried on my laptop, but had to use IE to make the page available. Once she retires I'll be freer to do what I want with her computer, but for now, she is a slave to the MS environment.
