Yep, leaving a regular paying job... possibly with good benefits and seniority along with having family in the general vicinity that you will be leaving as well is a choice I am thankful I do not have to make in order to relocate to a safer place well ahead of being forced to leave. I think it would be one of life's more difficult choices for many of us. Still, people are doing just that. What is referred to as the "Mountain Redoubt" - eastern Oregon, eastern Washington, Montana, Idaho, etc. is experiencing a real growth in population because many consider it much safer than where they came from. (Just too cold in winter for me, *laugh*. My wife wouldn't leave anyway due to family here and no ocean within reasonable driving distance.) Those of you not now living in your 'safe place' but in heavily populated urban or suburban areas have a real dilemma should things go south in a big way. Wish you the best and hope that you will be able to find a combination of planning and actions that will ensure your survival and continued good health.

  4. I wonder if anyone has ever discussed this subject with (in particular) survivors of European anti-Semitism. What convinced them to leave (bug-out) or stay. Some where I read that Jewish pessimists retired to Florida beaches, and the optimists died in the nazi gas chambers.

Vegas, or the surrounding area, might be a good place to stop. As soon as you hit town you will need to top off your tank, eat, sleep, and monitor the situation. Then you can decide what to do...go home or drive eastward. Being in Vegas will give you that much greater range from your vehicle, but getting your sister and BIL to pack-up and go to Vegas could be a problem. You might have to ask yourself if you could live without them and try to make a life for yourself somewhere else. I'm lucky as almost all of my family live close to me...I can throw rocks and hit their houses. If we weren't related we would be a cult...hell, maybe we are! My nephew and his family live about 125 miles away, and I decided long ago that if the SHTF I'm going after them...if I don't my sister will. Hopefully their plans to move back to NW Alabama will come to fruition soon, because I love them and they belong here.

wasn't quite that eazy to get out of Germany and then escape the reach of the Gestapo >>> FDR closed the US down to the european Jews - wouldn't even let one last shipload to unload in NYC Harbor - they all were sent to the gas chambers when the returning ship made the euro port >>>> ditto for the Brits - they closed down emigration to Palestine - wouldn't even allow the concentration camp survivors in after WW2 - and then armed the Arabs to wipe out newly formed Israel ...

Then it happened again in Texas,Thinking its the hurricane that pancaked Galveston?

Most major cities have traffic helicopters, and the pilots talk to each other to share their info so that they can fly more safely and take fewer chances - after all, if route "0" is a parking lot for ten miles after route "1," they don't ALL need to be there to report it - and that means more gas in the tank, lower costs, and longer "loiter" times on breaking news stories they want to compete on.

I used to know which frequencies they used, and if there was some big upheaval in progress, I could listen to them to get the "real dope" on which roads were starting to slow down. THAT would be my "alarm" signal to get out of town.

The only time I used it was during the morning when the police were chasing the suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing: the "traffic copter" pilots traded a few jokes about finally having no traffic jams, and I was able to change my flight reservation and get out for my vacation, on one of the last flights before they closed Logan airport.

It's not something that gives a lot of lead time - obviously - but it's a way to get an edge on the competition. YMMV.

the best time to leave was yesterday. The next best time is today. You are probably still good if you leave tomorrow.
Oh anytime after the election in 2020 (no matter who wins), it might be too late.

I generally agree but I'm stuck here right now for family obligations. I don't find LA so wonderful at all other than having good bicycle lanes

I'm the first one to admit, I need to study and evaluate the signs of trouble better.

Frequencies specifically on what kind of radio source?

Lots of good food for thought and discussion here. One person mentioned flu. I was a FEMA instructor trainer (well, the qual never expires, so guess I still am). For a 1918 type flu event, it won't take long for states and local communities to close their borders. Most cities have about 5 days worth of water treatment. Grocery stores have 3 to 5 days of food (minus some fresh stuff).

In the 1918 days, most people weren't dependent upon grocery stores. It was mostly a farm economy, where people grew and canned their own food, hunted, fished and there was no commercial air travel. A round of the flu can take up to 6 months to burn itself out.

So, as you plan your bug out or bug in, or whatever, might want to consider if main roads are patrolled and travel not allowed, and how you'd live with what you have for six months.

Ed, several years ago I read a book about bugging out in Los Angeles, especially after a seismic event. The book was "Slow Apocalypse" by John Varley. While I enjoyed the book greatly, my lack of knowledge concerning the geography of Southern California (streets, neighborhoods, cities, towns, roads, highways, etc.) hampered my enjoyment...and I even poured over maps trying to follow their journeys. Someone like yourself might get even more pleasure from the reading of this book. I'm sure that it is still available online in one form or another...I myself prefer physical books, but you might prefer electronic downloads. Happy reading

One small wreck or one car out of gas and a route that’s moving slowing becomes a parking lot without warning from anyone. I see it all the time on I-10. If your in the middle of it you are going nowhere.

I think that if all the banks close that's a pretty good clue something has gone wrong.
If you see the military/police beginning to create checkpoints/roadblocks, that is another good clue something has gone wrong.
I am always seeing crowded hospitals, but if the crowd is extending outside you know there is a serious problem.
Seeing the media is centrally controlled it is unlikely that news is going to warn anyone local radio stations do not even broadcast the latest earthquakes much less other disasters till they are told to. that would, "God forbid" interrupt the music and blather that goes on.
Local information sometimes can be heard on local amateur bands if you are acquainted with the folks that are regulars. if you only break in not knowing one from the other it might be useless. When I lived in the mountains our friends communicated regularly on road conditions year-round, those that had car trouble we rushed to help, same as you'd do if you were family. Pays to know who is talking.

While I was working I based my go point at 50 percent of the leo.s and firefighter's abandoning their jobs. But then again I planned to help myself, if you know what I mean, on the way out.

We didn't wait, we left Kalifornia in the Fall of 2012 and moved to the woods in Jefferson about 20 miles from Grants Pass.

Ca. got too regulated, too expensive and insanely left/socialist/communist and corrupt.
The writing has been on the wall for years, but it was only when we were retired that we were able to leave due to finances.

    No regrets.
