Every gas and diesel engine fabricates water... Hmmm... The reduced consumption of fossil fuels is keeping hydrogen bound up with carbon atoms and not allowing water to be produced! Yep, the California water shortage isn't Bush's fault, it's the Sierra Club's fault! There's the next bumper sticker, "Save the earth, more gas consumption = more rain production!"

Most municipal systems use chlorine gas as a part of water purification... most munis have about a 4 week supply of chorine on hand... hence the lack of pure water... this does not take in to consideration the pumping capabilities of each municipalities...

Chlorine is used as a disinfecting agent, not really purification. That said, there are a lot of treatment plants getting away from chlorine for safety reasons, and going to -hypochlorite (bleach) for that reason; it's way safer to handle and equally effective as a disinfecting agent..

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink. Getting to water and making it drinkable will be the issue. 3.5 million people die each year from impure water, 4,000 children a day.

There are folks out there that do not know where the meat in the grocery store is made..... do you think they can find water let alone make it potable....

As was said in some scary movie I watched ....."their gonna die" (in a child's voice no less)!!!!

And it will be due to their stupidity.... and the lack of experiences & training they have not received, due to today's society.... !!!

Buy yourself a few boxes of calcium hypochlorite (Pool Shock) and learn how to use it to make potable water. It has a nearly indefinite shelf life stored properly. No prepper should be without it! Stuff I'm sure most of us here already knows... Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) only has about a year shelf life. Of course, this doesn't really take into account salinity of water or other pollutants. It will just take care of the little critters. If you're relying on ocean water you'll need a distillation operation of no small measure to provide enough drinking water for survival. For any long term water usage where I am I would personally filter to the finest mesh i could acquire/engineer, then set up an open air boil to evaporate off as many pollutants as that might handle & then use pool shock to finish it off. And then hope for the best.

Wasn't there a whole thread on this way back when? Can't seem to find it.

Almost impossible to run a greenhouse without bleach and in a hot greenhouse the shelf life is days. Use the pool shock to make a stock and dilute for use. Use bleach to sterilize pruning shears after every use, could contaminate every following cut, sterilize all pots, flats and tables before reuse. Spray a very dilute solution on plants to kill blights, spray on walls and surfaces to disinfect, use in doubtful water, e coli etc. Let stand afterwards and pump air through the water, but a small amount, about 1 ppm, doesn't seem to bother plants, fish on the other hand will not tolerate it. Test with pool water test kit which will also give ph and other data. It is a pain in the *** but it reacts with iron and other minerals and they will settle out in the bottom of the tank. This can be used to help treat irrigation water from deep wells. Now that iodine is hard to get, tptb have to protect us you know, the uses for bleach, to sterilize diapers, clothing, food ware, bedding, use as a disinfectant , and so on would probably make it a great trade item if tshtf. Right up there with honey, salt and cooking oil.
