I was looking through one of my old journals tonight searching for one particular piece I wrote many years ago. I haven't found it yet but I came across the following. It made me sad to remember....

My memory proves my existence but the only thing I know for certain is that to dream is to want and to want is to need; erase the dream, let go of the want and there will be no need. I want nothing of all I used to need except to forget that I used to dream

Growing up in a military family, life was always temporary, impermanent, and home was where every we happened to be at any given moment. When I gave the eulogy at my mom’s funeral, I said that she was our home. She gave us roots, a sense of permanence, a place to land on our feet and rest without fear or uncertainty.

I learned some valuable life lessons by that existence. I learned to walk into a room of strangers and make a place for myself. I learned that a smile will bring...

I usually take such pleasure in my night time walks but not this year for some reason. I can't even recall exactly why I used to enjoy them so much but I guess it fits my mood, dark and cold.
I was thinking tonight that our lives are lived in moments, not days or weeks or years but in single, solitary moments. Many are remembered, some are cherished, and a few holding so much pain and grief that we try to bury them. Some are life changing and others come and go with no more than a glance.
I've been struggling a bit lately trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up, tinker, tailor, soldier, spy....the jury's still...

Well, with leaving active duty we were able to get more of a permanent place. Our place sits 1 mile from the county line approximately dead center between two mid-sized towns. It's a rural area. We have 8 acres, our own well, and plenty of wildlife.

We have a bit of open area that is planned for a small orchard (already started with 6 pear trees) and a few grapes. The front field already has a garden planted. Historically that was a good place for a garden after talking to the neighbors....
I guess that’s the adult version of “How are babies made” but something I find myself questioning. How did I come to be? How did this quirky, self protective, loner go from my first breath to the person living in my skin? Is there an alternate self hiding in the shadows?
My father was a man who believed in and lived the power of self. He believed what he wanted was within his reach if he stayed true to his beliefs and regardless of how he might be viewed by...

He didn't hear the screeching tires
or the sirens when they came.
As he lay there on the blacktop
He felt no fear or pain.

He wondered how he got there
In the stillness of this night,
The last thing he remembered
Was the glare of that head light.

And then he looked on down the road
And saw the mangled steel,
The handle bars and spinning tires,
Broken struts and upturned wheels.

In that very instant
He began to feel the pain.
He saw the river of his blood.
Felt his...
It didn't help that I brought home 2 more hens, packing it beyond it's capacity. The result was that the hens were given the freedom to roam the backyard at will.

Having hens loose in the yard can be charming, but stepping in warm chicken poo at 6 am while trying to feed the dog is not. Watching your obese hens gorge...
I tend to work late into the night, usually arriving home in the wee hours of the morning when the moon is at it's brightest. During the winter when the trees are bare, no matter how tired, the soft light of the full moon overhead in a cloudless, star filled sky and moon shadows before me, gently draws me to walk in the woods following paths I have known since childhood. In the summer, the canopy of leaves overhead makes...
